My First Dry Haircut Experience

Everyone has always known me for my thick, full, curly head of hair and lets just say it’s been my trademark since a very young child. Because I have so much hair, I thought it would be nearly impossible and somewhat strange to cut hair while it was dry. However, when I sat in Tina Tobar’s chair from the reneefeldmansalon in Chicago, all of that changed.  I met her last month at an event and we began to talk about my hair and its fullness.  That’s when I discovered she was a hairstylist so when she recently contacted me to do my hair, I thought why not give her a try? After all, she has been in the hair industry for ten years and I felt really comfortable around her.  When I sat in her chair for the first time, she began to tell me that she would be cutting my hair dry and that she is certified in the Deva Cut technique which means she will be dry cutting my hair and each curl so it will lay a certain way. At first I was nervous and my heart started to pound a little faster. I’ve only had haircuts while my hair is wet my whole life, so the concept of cutting my hair while it was curly and dry was totally new (and a little scary) to me at first.  I reminded myself that she is an expert stylist, and trained to do this type of cut on curly hair so I didn’t say a word and let her work her magic.

And she sure did!  She exceeded my expectations as she expertly “dug in” with ease and began to snip and cut where she felt the curls would lay best.  She even removed some of the heaviness and bulk from my hair with such skill and expertise. I also got to see what my hair would look like curly with the layers she gave while my hair was still dry, then they washed my hair, and she blow dried it so I could see it straight as well. How awesome is that?! When I tell you that by the end of my salon experience and my hair was blow dried straight, I truly felt like my head was ten pounds lighter. I had movement, texture, and bounce to my hair and the layers were perfectly done.  I walked out of the salon feeling like a model from a TV commercial with my hair blowing in the Chicago wind and all.  It was just an incredible salon experience from the coat check, to them offering you tea, coffee, or water, to the professionalism from the staff. This beautiful salon is located in the Gold Coast in Chicago and has been Featured in CS Magazine and Modern Luxury Weddings.

The end result was a long bob a tiny bit shorter in the back than in the front with layers in the back & face framing layers. I absolutely love it!

Meet the hairstylist: Tina Tobar is truly a hair genius and a total sweetheart.  She really walks you through what she is going to do to your hair, and this talented and beautiful gem does it all. She cuts, colors, does hair extensions, bridal style and updos, and she is always keeping up with the latest classes and trends in the beauty and hair industry.  What I love is that she actually enjoys specializing in everything and many hair stylists usually just focus in one specific area such as just color or just cuts. From getting to know her, it was such a pleasure to hear that she truly enjoys specializing in everything and that she genuinely loves what she does. My experience at the reneefeldmansalon was wonderful. Great cut, great stylists, and a great salon. Hope you enjoyed my salon review as well as my first dry haircut experience! I love the simplicity and minimalistic design of the salon. They also carry great hair product lines such as Aquage, Oribe, and Olaplex.  This one stop shop full service salon even offers make-up services and house calls for your special day!

I have learned a valuable lesson in all of this. Be more adventurous and change can be a great thing! Next time I may even go shorter in the back..but baby steps for now!

With love,

Sonia

Do they do dry cuts for simply “dusting split ends” to not sacrifice length?

Hello! Yes they do that as well! That’s basically what I did because I did not want the length cut off the bottom of my hair. Just the layers.
